Work Diary- Shoot 5(People and their camera)

PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS

For this shoot I plan to capture a variety of natural images which show people enjoying their surrounds through the lens of a camera and helping to creating permanent memories in the form of an image.

EVALUATIONS

I like this as it shows passion from the women to capture a good photograph. The women is shown to be taking a photograph of an area or landmark. When I took this image the women stood positioned there for a long time changing the angle of her camera and adjusting her focal length. I found this interesting as she wanted to show the place in a professional way and spent the time to make the outcome the best it could be. The bag she has around her neck is for the camera, showing that she has great care for the camera. Also the bag could contain different lenses that also shows her passion for a great photograph. I like the composition of this image and the focal point of this image. Although the women is not in the centre of the image the main focal point is still on her, I think this is due to the trees placed within the top of the image.

This photograph shows a couple having their photograph taken in-front of a fountain. This image actually shows two types of photography equipment, one is a smart phone whilst the other appears to be a camera or video recorder with a large lens designed for a large focal length. This creates a slight contrast within the image, as there is one type of possession being shown however within two formats which have different values. I think by showing a very expensive piece of photography equipment and a phone which has the camera built into it shows the contrast between peoples interest. The man with the large camera is capturing detail of the surrounds however the person who wishes to take an image with the phone wishes to capture a memory of being their at that time with a loved one and appreciate the surrounding at the time and does not wish to take photographs for a future record.

PROGRESS

I have an interest in photography and cameras, therefore I found it very interesting to display the different ways in which people can take photographs within one image. I like the way in which I took these images and how the images are not posed for, display a very realistic and natural setting. I do not plan to develop this idea further as I wish to continue with taking images of people in an everyday environment. However, a way in which I would develop this would be by photographing many cameras within the studio, I have a variety of old cameras and would therefore use these along with some modern cameras to display camera developments through different generations.

Work Diary- Shoot 4 (people and the possessions they hold)

PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS

For this shoot I plan to do an outdoors shoot in a city and take pictures of People and their Possessions. I plan to gather a selection of images displaying People and the Possession which they have with them to a day to day basis when they are out. This will help to show the vast lack of items which people travel with. It will also suggest what a person is doing or their direction for that day, for example if they are traveling with a suitcase may mean they are making a journey somewhere (such as a holiday or business trip). I think the possessions which we see people with is what we base our first impression on as it is the first part of them we see of them.

EVALUATIONS

The main focus to this image is the two roller skaters to the right hand side of this image. I used the rule of thirds and used two thirds of the photograph to help create an interesting, off centre, focal point. The image shows a popular area on a sunny day with a variety of features and background activities within the setting. I feel that although this image appears busy and to have a lot of different things taking place, the two roller skaters are the main focus point and remain the subjects of the image. Based on what we see from this image we could make an assumption that the people are local to the area due to the two have very little belongings on their person suggesting they and are not tourists and this is an activity which they like to do together through a local park on a sunny day.

I really like this image because I like how it has captured the man on a journey. I also like how the image is showing the man carrying his possessions on his back. Suggesting that he is traveling and at this moment has his life on his back. This shows a contrast between people who have a large amount of items which spend their time in posh hotels and value there expensive belongings compared to this man who probably values seeing different cultures and experience them. This suggests how he values different peoples life style and situations and empathises with the different struggles that people face within their cultures and lives.

PROGRESSION

I enjoyed capturing images representing people within everyday life. I felt by showing a brief preview of peoples personality and interests through their possessions they have on their person at that given moment in time. For my next shoot I plan to capture people with their cameras. Cameras hold  great amounts of value as well as often sentimental value due to the image saved on their camera which hold so many memories.

Work Diary- Shoot 3(People and basic possessions)

PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS

I wish to capture people using basic items within this shoot. I hope to achieve some images which show different people using small belonging.

EVALUATIONS

The young women displayed to the left is shown to be on her phone. To most teenagers and young adults a phone is seen to be as one of their most important possessions. The women is surrounded by famous landmarks and blue skies yet is focus on her phone. I think this displays the negative impact that technology is having on today's society. I took this image from a distance and zoomed in with my camera then also cropped the image within Photoshop. I used a focal length of 55mm with a f setting of 11. The natural lighting at the time I took this image was very good and created a strong shadow behind the girl, therefore no flash was required to capture this image. I am really happy with this image and I believe it demonstrated a strong issue within today's society in a subtle way.

In my opinion, the book the man is reading represents a small possession which allows people to escape. People often surround themselves with expensive belongings and an excessive amount of possessions to make them feel better and satisfied with life. I think this images shows a man focused on a single possession which often hold very little value. I think the two types of images which is related both displayed a different message however have created a strong contrast within the shoot. I planned to show two types of possessions however I think the age different between the models within the two images enhance the change through generations. Showing what people are more interested in and how different age brackets would rather spend their time. This show the stereotypes of how middle aged adults may rather spend their time engrossed in a book whilst potentially increasing their knowledge or understanding. Whereas teenagers are more focused on the drama of their favourite celebrities lives and keeping up to date through social media.

PROGRESSION

I really enjoyed capturing people in a natural environment without their knowledge, I think it creates more natural and realistic images. I prefer these natural images compared to taking images of a model set up within a studio. Therefore I plan to continue with location shoots displaying people and their different types of possessions.

Work Diary- Shoot 2(Jason Travis Inspired)

PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS

I hope to achieve a collection of successful images inspired by Jason Travis's work. I will use the studio to set up and photograph the items of peoples on a white background.

EVALUATIONS

The two images above show how the studio set up I used to create the bottom images from my Diptych's. I placed the objects on the table before rising the tripod and tilting the camera so it was positioned directly above the objects. This was tricky to accomplish as it was difficult to get the correct angle. For these images I used f/8 with ISO 200, 1/125 seconds exposure and 24.0mm focal length. I think these settings worked well and produced clear and detailed images.

For this image I used a model and a few of the objects that she selected from her bag. The objects help to reflect a typical modern day female teenager. I was very happy with the positioning of the items within the bottom image. In my opinion the image is not cluttered I used a pink background for the image of the girl to enhance this idea of her being a very girly person.
I produced this image within my second shoot, who was inspired by Jason Travis shoots. I'm the person in the photograph is me, I used a time delay on my camera and tripod to take the image. I chose this background because I thought it was interesting due to the variety of colour and textures within. Also the depth of view within the background made it appealing to me. the background helped me to show the hobby which I was displaying. I like how this helps to show the varieties of colours and textures within the image. The place the image was taken helped to relate to the hobby being shown through the possessions in the image because a photographer thinks about setting, lighting and colour scheme for the best quality image. I also felt that if I would have taken this in the studio the black or white background wouldn't have worked as well as this setting. Within the second image I also like the positioning of the items as they are very organised showing how much care they have for their equipment.

Below is a link to how I created these Diptych images and created this structure within Photoshop.

PROGRESSION

I really enjoyed this shoot and found it interesting to work in the style of one of my favourite photographers, Jason Travis. I think this is an interesting concept which I could explore more however I wish to explore different areas within my project now.

Work Diary- Shoot 1 (people and laid out possessions)

PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS

For this shoot I plan to take a few images based on some of Jason Travis work, to the left is an image which I have used for inspiration for this shoot. My work will be influenced by Jason Travis composition and use of Diptych.  I hope to produce selection of images involving multiple possessions laid out, displaying a collection of peoples items. My main goal for this shoot is to get an initial feel for this particular topic.

EVALUATIONS

I first decided to create this image to show my little sister with some of her belongings which she uses to complete her homework. I like how the two images have been placed and how the belongings are positioned underneath her. This image is very similar to Jason Travis work due to the position of the two images in this particular Diptych. I took this image within my bedroom with natural lighting, the lighting and colours which this natural lighting created allowed me to edit the image and change it into black and white to create a more interesting and appealing image.

I took this image to display a student at work. I took all the items scattered around her work space and lined them up in front of her computer. I like how this image turned out and how the natural lighting highlights the girls face. Although it is natural lighting which brightens up the girls face I think it helps to suggest how the girl is focused on the computer screen and reminds me of many movie scenes where the persons face is lit up by the computer screen. I placed these images next to each other instead of on top of each other as I felt it was more appropriate and worked better for these two particular images.

Below is a link to how I created these Diptych images and created this structure within Photoshop.

PROGRESSION

I am going to carry on with a Jason Travis inspired shoot. I plan to take the photographs of the objects within the studio and the images of the models in a variety of locations. I really like photographing and editing using this technique.
Below is a link to a previously created technique page which describes how to make a basic multiple imagery(Or in this case diptych)

Technique page- Multiple Imagery

Multiple imagery can be create by using a variety of image which may or may not link. The steps below will show how the technique is created within photoshop.
  1. Take the desired amount of photo and upload them to photoshop (from 2, 3, 4, 9, 16 ect)
  2. Adjust and edit each photo as you wish then flatten each one.
  3. Create a new document size may vary depending on how many images you are using however 20 by 20 cm is often good if creating a multiple image with 9 images.
  4. Make all the photos which you are using to one size by adjusting the setting on the crop tool (this can be done by adjusting the number which would appear on the top left hand of the screen, as shown in the image below)

The number which are being used should be portional to find out what size to use you can go to adjust the size of the image click 'Image' at the top of the screen to resale a full down set of options chose 'image size'
This option will appear, change the width to 5 or 5.5 or a size of your choosing,( Ensure that is is set to cm and that the resolution is set to pixel/inch). Due to the re-sample option being on automatic it it will automatically adjust the height to size which is proportional. Then use these numbers for the width, height and resolution with the crop option shown above. Ensuring it is set on px/inch on the crop option which can be changed next to the resolution.
5. Put all the chosen images into the new document and move around to a way in which you like.
6. Save the image as a jpeg.

A multiple imagery with two images can be know as diptych and one with three images can be known as a triptych, these are created the same way as described above.

People and Possessions Discusion

The mind-map above show a few ways in which people and possessions can be interpenetrated. I choose to study people and possessions because I find it to be something different to what I have worked on before however link closer to some photographers which i like and could use for this project. For this project i have reviewed in detail Tobias Lang, Jess Morgan, Jim Goldmen, Jason Travis and Henrik Bonnevier.

By researching people and possessions it allows me to develop images and express peoples emotions towards certain belongings and show people what items people value within their life. This topic could also be taken further by exploring the lack of possessions and materialism. Materialism relates to this topic due to the way people can be seen as items. A good example of this was by Cassia Arellano.

I really like the way in which this image displays Materialism. The person has been given a barcode and used to show her as an item which can be catalogued and categorised with similar possessions. This takes away people individuality and humanity which shows the inhuman treatment some people face. I think this an extremely powerful and effective piece which is inspirational to many aspiring photographers.

The suggested photographers for this topic from the exam paper are Cynthia Connolly, Peter Menzel and Elliot Irwitt. Below is an example from each photographer.
Cynthia Connolly
Cynthia Connolly has a series of image representing people and possessions by showing them with their cars. I believe this is an interesting area to explore as cars are large and expensive possessions which people are often are very passionate and protective about. This image also tackels stereotypes, which the topic people and possessions allow people to do in an affective way, it displays a women who is passionsate about her car. This is a contrast on the stereotype of men and their passion for cars.
Elliot Irwitt
This is an example of Elliot Irwitt work. In my opinion, this is a good representation of people and their dogs. This image is also displaying their importance within peoples life. This is also showing how a dog can sometime rule someones life as they are such a big responsibility, due to the positioning of the dog on their owners lap. The positioning of the dogs could also show the hierarchy of them. The owner is beneath the dog so could suggest that they are in charge or that the owner would think of them before his/herself.

Peter Menzel
This image shows that different cultures appreciate possession differently and how people in different geographical locations view the amount of possessions they have as irrelevant. This also displays how people do not care about the value of   their possessions compared to people in other geographical locations because they care more about the people that are close to them and would share these possessions with. This interpretation comes from the happy expressions on the people faces and the few items they possess.

Image Bank

The above four images are by Jason Travis, a very interesting photography who I think will in used a lot within my project. Due to his work and how his individual pieces appeal to me. The images show a idea which he has used multiple times and works well. The images show a form of diptych which he uses to reflect a person and some of there items which they hold close. I like the way in which he experiments with depth of field when it comes to the way in which he photograph's the people.

These three images show different ways to place items and reflect the belonging of an individual. I think each way has shown a different style and way to display items, in my opinion each image also helps to show peoples personally and style due to the way in which they are positioned and the background. For example, the first image would suggest the man is very organised.

I selected the following images as they are a good example of hobbies and show how people often have many items related to their hobbies.

The selected images show people and their pets. People often have a strong bond with their pets and care for them very well. A possession can be seen as an belonging which you have responsibility for and therefore a people and their pets is a relevant topic within people and possessions. The last four images show a series which was created by Tobias Lang, a photographer which I have researched in depth during this project.
I like the image above because of the creative way in which it links to people and possessions. Money and small belongs are often found down the back of a sofa and people dig their hand down to find them. This image shows the opposite of this and shows the hand reaching how. This image could be interpreted to have a much deeper meaning and suggest that people can often be forgotten about and ignored like pennies at the back of the sofa.

The photographs have been created using a variety of photographic techniques. I think these images link to people and possessions and it shows how people have emotional baggage on them which effect their life and happiness and one way which I see possessions is as a belonging which affects us. Therefore I think the images show how people have an emotional possession which effects them and they can not get rid of.

These image represent family's and relationship with people. I think these images show people and possessions due to how it shows the belonging and responsibility which parents or family members have relating to other individuals within their family. The baby photos show some small possessions which they hold however I think it represent the possessions of the parents as the parent possessions and priority of what to buy would change from expensive clothes to nappies. People often are limited with the possessions they have due to a lack of money, by showing peoples family is displays how.
