Work Diary- Shoot 9(Lack of possessions)

PLANS AND PROGRESSION

For this shoot I wish to develop from showing what people have to show what people lack. I hope to produce a selection of images which display peoples lack of possessions. I will do this by showing street artists who are trying to earn money through a particular skill they have. Many people do this as they have no other form of income and need to feed themselves or their families. I think this is an interesting way to show People and Possessions as it is showing the possessions which they lack and I believe a stable job/career could be viewed as a possession.

EVALUATIONS

I took this image to demonstrate lack of possessions as it shows a man performing to a crowd for money. I like how this image shows a man who is equally as capable as many other dancers who earn a lot of money within their industry, however he is having to take to the street to make ends meet. To me this is a very powerful image which make me think about how persistent people are in making their dreams come true. To capture this image I used the following camera settings, ISO 100, f/8, with a stutter speed of 1/2000 seconds  and a focal length of 55.0 mm. I think I could have improved this image taking more images of the man at different stages of his performance and create an animation from them. Although no animation is used within this image, I think there is a clear sense of movement displayed within this image. Overall, I am pleased with this image and how the image suggests the man has a crowd surrounding him.

This image is very different to the rest of the photographs within my shoot, however I included it with my images for this shoot as I felt it was a very powerful image which represented a lack of possessions or a loss of possessions. One interpretation of this image could be that this is a wardrobe of a person who has passed away and their belongings have been removed. I gathered this judgment from the lack of belongings along with the background of the wardrobe as it appears to be very old fashioned and designed for an old lady, suggesting it was a recently deceased old lady's wardrobe.  I think this interpretation is highlighted because of  black and white filter placed on the image. I turned this image into black and white by a simple adjustment within Photoshop. I done this as the lighting from the room produced a very yellow toned image which was not very eye pleasing. I felt that the black and white filter produced a much more intense and meaningful image with a sad atmosphere. The camera was set to the following setting for this particular image, 1/40 seconds, ISO 200, f/4 with a focal length of 27.0mm. I tried taking this image with and without a flash, however both images involved unappealing yellow tones.

PROGRESSION

Although this is the last shoot for my unit 4 (not including my exam), I think this is an interesting topic which I started to explore and would explore in more depth if not limited by time. I like the two different concepts which I involved within this shot. This shoot made me look and think about peoples current positions and make a judgment as to whether the person is on the street performing because they enjoy it or they have no other option, I found this more difficult than I original thought. I think this shoot has opened my eyes to see how we can not understand someone's life or situation just from looking at them and the clothes they have on their backs.

Work Diary- Shoot 8(People and their relationships)

PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS

For this shoot I plan to show different peoples relationships. Jess Morgan influenced this shoot because of her work with children and families. I plan to capture realistic images which are not staged and show peoples relationships. I will being taking these images in a city.

EVALUATIONS

When I was out shooting I was lucky enough that there was a recently married couple out taking some wedding pictures. I like how this image represents three different generations and three different types of relationships. On the left hand side it shows a mother with her baby seated within their pram, this shows a relationship between a mother and her young developing child, suggesting they have a playful relationship which brings them both joy. People can often interpret possessions as something or someone you have responsibility for, therefore this mother and child displayed within the image would display People and Possessions because a mother has a large responsibility for her child. Slightly off centre is the women in her wedding dress along with what appears to be a friend, this shows a different type of friendship and would suggest to  me how the two share many memories together. People often have their friends possessions as they have been left with them or shared with them for example a friendship bracelet. In my opinion by seeing this friendship between the girls it makes me think about all the belongings which they share and memories that they have made together which go along with them. To the right hand side of the image there is a women in a wheelchair with a person who could be her son pushing her. Although this is another parent and child relationship, I believe it is showing a different stage within this parent and child relationship. These two people represent how possessions and relationships change. As people age they lose certain abilities which they once took for granted. For example, people go from driving people around to needing help to get around themselves and from creating crazy memories with friends to hold onto them due to their current limitations such as old age or disabilities. Overall I really like this image and I feel there is many interpretations and messages which could be inferred from it, this is what intrigues me the most about the piece. An overall idea of development and growth is displayed within the image. The change of possessions is represent by how the image shows different people from right to left. It turns from the main belongings being a pram to a wedding dress then a wheelchair. This shows certain stages within a persons life. A person goes from being very needy and reliant on another person to leaving their parents behind by starting a new chapter in their life and getting married to then having to rely on people again. I am most impressed with the lighting and shadows within this image and how only used natural lighting to captured this image.

I took this image to show the loss of a person and how people remember them. When people lose someone close to them they often buy items to help keep their memory alive and show respect, this being candles, framed photos and even flowers which they liked. Although I do not think of people as possessions I think that this image still represents People and Possessions as it shows how someone has lost a person and  had an impact on their life. In my opinion a possession could be seen as a person or object which has an impact on your life. Each flame within the image displays a different persons grieving process and how they are trying to keep the light (memory) of the persons life alive and think about all the times which they brought them happiness and guidance. A very bright candle is placed on top of multiple burnt out candles, in my opinion this displays how each time a candle burns out a person would relight a new one again in the person honour. this is to keep their memory burning. I would link this image to people and their relationship as it shows how people hold on to emotions and relationships after people are no longer in their life or died.

PROGRESSION

I found this area of People and Possessions to be extremely interesting to explore as I was able to show a variety of different relationships. Also I was able to demonstrate an old fashioned belief that once married a wife becomes the mans possession.

Work Diary- Shoot 7 (People and their pets)

PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS

I decided to take a selection of images showing people and their pets. The idea of this shoot was influenced by Elliot Irwitt, a suggested photographer within the exam paper. I have decided to focus on the animals instead of the owners as I think this would be interesting to show the animals as an individual instead of how they are heavily relent on an owner.

EVALUATIONS

I  like how the two images to the left show an animal in a very natural background. I took these images to represent people and their pets. The images show a domestic cat and dog. I like how in both images the animal is placed in the central of the photograph, creating a good composition and keeping the animal as the main focus.  I enjoyed taking these images however they are very basic images.

I created this image as I thought it was a good representation of people and their pets. I think this shows how the owner has control over the dog and their responsibility for the animal. I interpreted this because of how the girl is walking the dog as if it is her job and responsibility. Showing how an animal comes with commitments. I like the framing of this image and the focus.

Below is a link to how I created the following Triptych image and created this structure within Photoshop.

PROGRESSION

I enjoyed this shoot and think I did create some good images. I like this idea of representing people and their relationships with their animals. I find it intriguing how a relationship can be seen as a possession and something we have control of through our actions and therefore I am going to processed by looking into people and their relationships with people.

Work Diary- Shoot 6(People and vehicles)

PLANS AND EXPECTATIONS

Cars are a large possession which are important in many peoples lives for a variety of reasons. Restoring an old Classic car could be a hobby of someone's as they like to learn how the car is put together and build it so there is a connection with the owner and possession. The restoring of Classic cars might not be just for their enjoyment but also as a career. For example, a person could have hired them to restore their cars for them because they might not have enough the time themselves or the knowledge to do so to a good quality and this shows that the person takes pride in their car and wants it at the best quality. People have careers in fixing and maintaining cars as everyday people rely on them for many reasons, big or small. Also cars are an important belonging for young adults as it may be the first sense of freedom they feel as they still live at home with carers or family and now have the opportunity to get them self's around and have some more freedom.

EVALUATIONS

When I originally start this shoot I was going to shoot just people and their vehicles, however once I was out shooting I found that cars are not the only form of transport people use. When I was looking out for people and their cars I realised the variety of vehicles which are available. I adjusted my original aim for this shoot and widened my ideas to include any form of transport allowing me to show a contrast within my images.

I was intrigued by the scene shown to the left, it displayed a man with a form of transport which was also how he earned money. This is popular in city's and is often seen as quite a romantic way to travel. I decided to take this image to show many possessions link to people jobs. For this image I used my flash to enhance the man features. I think this worked well and I like the way in which his shoes have reflected the light and created this bright glare. In my opinion the second man positioned to the left of the bike is a very interesting character and helps to show a contrast. A contrast between the men is created and shows the difference between men who have a very physical and active job compared to many desk based careers. This interpretation comes from the exhausted expressed on the mans face to the left compared to the relaxed man running the large bike. This could also demonstrate how people travel differently, the man to the left is probably used to travel by a car which requires very little effort whereas the other man travels by bike for his job and is potentially much more active and therefore fitter.

I really like how this image represent a family with a lot of money and how they travel. This is a big example of how people own different possessions. I think this shows how some people spend their money differently and how the possessions which they've bought affect their lives. An everyday working class family would not be able to stop their lives and take a day trip on a boat as they have a commitment to their jobs, However this image shows how these people may be very high up managers or CEO's of companies and can take the day to relax on their boat.

PROGRESSION

For my next shoot I plan to take images of people and their pets. I wish to focus on the animals themselves and show them separate from their owners. I think this shoot went well and I like the images which I captured. I think many have a much deeper meaning then what first meets the eye and tackles problems within society and the different ways in which people live.
